As i work my way through cataloging images i have shot over the years from specific favorite South Shore locations i have come to Cherry Hill Beach. I didn't come to know this beach until moving here 2 1/2 years ago, so i haven't spent nearly as much time with it as Gaff Point. But it is a marvelous spot that, again, displays many features that are quite unlike any of my other fav shoreline locations, yet all these areas are geographically quite close to one another. The character of each is completely different however. (See the map below for where these beaches are positioned)
Cherry Hill is situated at the mouth of the Medway River. It is an arching curve stretching roughly 1.5km from the community of Cherry Hill to where that river opens up to the sea. Low tide can reveal a wide sandy beach, but when the tide is high one finds themselves forced to transverse a long ridge of rocks pilled high by the forces of nature that runs most of the length of the beach. On the back side of this stony mountain the estuary of the Medway River forms a lush wetland of beach grasses and other marine flora with a few tiny islands dotting the brackish water that create a unique environment for all kinds of wildlife. Endangered Piping Plovers breed here and large areas of the back beach are off limits during the nesting season in the spring. This beach also boasts one of the very best locations i have found for periwinkles, an edible sea snails that gather here by the thousands at the beach's end area.
Cherry Hill is also known locally for it's waves and is a favourite spot for surfers all year long.
Like the other beaches i frequent i could probably create a entire photo book just on this one location, or it could form a large chapter in a book about South Shore beaches in general.
Please enjoy this collection of images shot over the past few years.

Very nice, David! That is a gorgeous collection.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandy! I've been compiling images from my favourite locations lately. I'll probably do something similar for all the local beaches.
