I was fortunate for the second time to be able the catch the opening night parade. In 2017 i had a paying gig that night and thought i would miss it, but the job (which luckily was right on the parade route) finished up early and i was just in time to catch the start. You can see those photos HERE.
This year i just happened to be in Cincinnati for a wedding, so a group of us headed downtown to attempt to navigate the great masses of people and hopefully find a good vantage point to view the festivities. Not an easy venture as folks were lining the avenue a dozen deep in some spots, but we kept heading further downtown until we finally found some thinning of the herd near Fourth & Vine.
The first year i was fully armed, having come directly from a professional shoot with all my gear in hand. So i had two DSLR cameras, flash for some nifty shutter dragging lighting effects and an available focal length range of 24 - 200mm to work with. This time, however, i had just flown down from Nova Scotia for the first time in over a year and had made a conscious decision to travel light. So all i had to shoot with was my mirrorless Nikon Z6 and one prime 35mm ƒ1.8 lens. Of course, this required a few adjustments from the way i approached shooting the first parade. While i feel i did miss a few shots that i might have made with full gear in tow i am still fairly pleased with the results. Most of these were shot at ISO 6400 with no noise reduction added and some of the files were pushed as much as a stop and a half in post, so i believe that camera handed itself pretty well capturing fast-paced action in this existing low-light circumstance.

"Mr. Cincinnati" himself, Jim Tarbell, leads the parade!
