I had the pleasure of driving down to Lexington this fall to shoot Julia Knight, a 17 yr. old singer/songwriter who is being featured on the Lifetime reality series Chasing Nashville. Three of the shots from this session are in the winter edition of Story Magazine. Since the issue just went to the stands here is my "director's cut".

I didn't know much about the Lexington area so i left it up to the magazine editor to choose a location for our shoot. She picked a small, but lovely historic district around Gratz Park and we were fortunate enough to get a brilliant mid-fall afternoon for the shoot.

Working with this young, aspiring country singer was a breeze. Julia handled herself like a professional with a maturity far beyond her years. She also seemed to know exactly how she wanted to present herself, a strong and predetermined sense of image. Still, she was open to prompts and suggestions without question and never seemed the lest bit uncomfortable during the shoot.

I was happy to have assistance from my friend Bradley List who handled reflectors and an occasional umbrella w/ a couple of speedlights. You can certainly do this kind of light augmentation on your own, but it's much smoother and quicker to be able to direct an assistant and you don't have to worry about the wind blowing over your light stand.

Julia just struck me as a determined professional when she stood in this doorway and instantly struck a pose with such nice and expressive form.

It's also great to work with a subject who knows how to engage the camera with honest and open direct eye contact.

Here is the layout as it appears in the magazine. I do like the opening image in color for publication purposes (there is a pleasing mix of hues), but also really enjoy the black & white treatment i gave it at the start of the blog.
Pick up a copy of the issue if you want to read more about Julia's story. I have a feeling we will be hearing more about this precocious young lady in the near future.
